To create these interactive flights over Mount Everest (8848 meters) and Makalu (8485 meters), David Breashears attached six cameras to a helicopter, comprising a 250 degree wide array. As the helicopter flew over the glacial terrain, the cameras simultaneously shot photographs every three seconds. The images were then stitched together to produce these interactive movies, where each frame contains 60 million pixels. Five of the six highest mountains in the world are visible in these flights: Mount Qomolangma, Kangchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. The flights invite exploration of these grand mountains and glaciers, but also serve as a high resolution photographic record of the state of the glaciers in January 2012. What will these glaciers look like 50 years from now? These interactive flights were developed through a collaboration between GlacierWorks and Microsoft Photosynth.
